The following review was published in the State News October 19, 1988 Radio fills a void; Skor lacks direction By C. Frederick Lathrop State News Reviewer
Skor This band has all the credentials - drummer Dave Wygmans has studied at the Interlochen School of music and guitarist Hugh Wygmans has extensive experience in theory and classical guitar. Skor's tape is also very professionally packaged. But Long Way Home proves that music still is the bottom line. Sure these guys can play but their songs lack direction and focus.

"My Love is Right" sounds like a Richard Marx tune, and the rest of the tape combines Rush-like
vocals with keyboards and backing vocals that are a little on the whimpy side. Hugh Wygmans guitar confuses matters even further. It's nice to finally hear a guitarist who has enough guts to add distortion to his sound and can actually play a blues/rock solo, but the combination of rock'n'roll power and candy-coated pop stylings is a definite hinderance. Before Skor can make any progress forward, it must decide whether it wants to be (a) power rock band or a commercial pop band. Such a mixture can only produce a Richard Marx sound. And these guys can do better than that. View actual newspaper article |
This is the only review of ...long way home. I couldn't wait for it to come out. I was nervous, yet positive that they would like it as much as Skor's friends and supporters seemed to. (Can a band have friends? I say yes.) Some of the performances were less than stellar, but overall a good first-time effort. I had mixed feelings after I read the review. I was happy about the nice things that C. Lathrop had written, especially those about me, but I was bummed that he didn't like it overall. In contrast, he gave high praise to Capitol Radio, a reggea/ska band, in the same article. They sent in a tape that "sounds like it was recorded at a house party." His words, not mine. I believe that he held us to a higher standard because of the profesional look and sound of our tape. I knew that his "whimpy side" remark was right. He was also the first reviewer to point out a lack of "direction and focus" in my song writing. I still don't limit my songs to one genre.
